You cannot outrun His love. You cannot exhaust His mercies. You can choose to live in sin, though it will destroy you if you decide to do so. Furthermore, it will never allow you to live in peace because your spirit has been awakened to sin and can now no longer accept sin. Your spirit will never rest while in disobedience to God’s ways. For it is impossible to be a child of God and to live a life of sin (intentionally and without repentance). You either turn away and let God heal you (David), or you plug your ears and allow sin to bring about death, as it can only do (Solomon).
This is why the prodigal son came home…even if his repentance was not entirely genuine, he came to see that life in sin and ignoring his father was destruction. He came home because he knew His Father was rich and even if he could be a servant in dad’s house that would be better than living a life in destruction. And the Father, having none of this slave talk, kisses his son, blesses him and restores him to his rightful place in the family. We do not know much beyond that. We do know, the older brother was angry with the father for having mercy on his younger brother. Neither son was in great condition…one bitter and angry with his father. The other, having just recently brought terrible pain and heartache upon himself by living carelessly. But either way, broken as both were, they were sons. And they were both given access to all that was the Father’s.
The point: You are a son or a daughter. Just come home. A son is not meant to live a life of destruction. You have the riches of God to enjoy.
And if you’ve been faithfully serving God and feel bitter about your role or a lack of appreciation, know too, that all of God’s riches are yours as well…and be thankful you did not have to go through destroying your life to realize where you belong. Are you angry with Father God? Too ashamed to approach Him? Think he has been unfair? Maybe you even feel like you hate Him for things that have happened in your life. That’s fine. He can handle it. Just come to Him and let Him lavish the riches of His love upon you. You are still a son or daughter.
